Film Review | Cruelty and Kindness Mingle in the Wonderful Summer 1993

Ged Murray Jul 20, 2018 0
Summer 1993 is a portrait of a child having her world upended that manages to be kind without puling punches and sad without being maudlin. It's a great achievement for the feature debut of Spanish director Carla Simón. The story…

Film Review | I Feel Pretty Swaps Its’ Star’s Charisma for a Preachy Message

Ged Murray Apr 30, 2018 0
The premise of I Feel Pretty has raised many an eyebrow since the first publicity materials found their way online. The elevator pitch is something like this; 'an insecure, overweight woman, after being dinged on the head, wakes up…

Film Review | Cowboys Ride in to a Bulgarian Village in Western

Ged Murray Apr 13, 2018 0
In spite of it's title, Valeska Grisebach's Western takes place in Bulgaria; an area that was once a frontier of sorts for Germany during a brief and particularly dark moment in history. The German workers sent to build a power plant in the…

Film Review | Cannes Winner The Square Finds Comedy in Discomfort

Ged Murray Mar 15, 2018 0
Ruben Östlund's last film, 2014's brilliant Force Majeure, unflinchingly scrutinised a middle class Dad and his family coming apart after one huge fuck up. It's heightened cringe comedy came from the director's ability to relentlessly…

Film Review | Torturous Damo and Ivor: The Movie – A Big Step Backwards for Irish Comedy

Ged Murray Mar 13, 2018 0
The reaction at the press screening for Damo and Ivor: The Movie was like a group of people watching newsreel footage of the Germans taking Paris. The stony, resigned silence was broken only by the desperate yammering coming from the…

Oscar Snub | Why Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was Cruelly Omitted

Ged Murray Feb 22, 2018 0
The Oscars are, at least in theory, meant to be about acknowledging the best of the best of an art form. In practice this can result in little more than a tool for boosting the box office take of middlebrow dramas via a one night pageant…

Film Review | The Dark and Hilarious World of Athletic Pageantry in I, Tonya

Ged Murray Feb 20, 2018 0
In telling the story of Tonya Harding, a figure skater famous for both her impoverished background and the 1994 attack on her rival's leg bones, I, Tonya promises to be a fun, frothy biopic. It's true that the movie has plenty of…

Film Review | Truth, Integrity, and Honesty – But is there a Place for The Postin…

Ged Murray Jan 8, 2018 0
In 1993 Spielberg managed the feat of dominating the box office and the awards season with a double whammy of Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. Since then it seems he's attempting the same trick once a decade. In the 2005 he paired Munich…

Film Review | Dissecting The Room and Tommy Wiseau in James Franco’s The Disaster Artist

Ged Murray Nov 29, 2017 0
Tommy Wiseau's The Room, a Tennessee Williams-like melodrama that was seemingly created by a wounded, misogynist alien, isn't just a notoriously bad movie, it is widely regarded as the best bad movie ever made. In large part this is down to…

Film Review | Justice League – After all the Waiting, We Have This?

Ged Murray Nov 24, 2017 2
The opening scene of Justice League, DC's long in gestation, superhero ensemble, features fan footage of the recently deceased Superman talking to an excited young admirer. He tells the kid about hope; about how it can seem lost at times…
