Crystal Fairy and The Magical Cactus

Michael Cera went to Chile to be cool for a while. At least that’s how I understand it, and he succeeded magnificently. While he was there he made two low-budget films with the same director, both of which took him out of his typecast character and one of which was Crystal Fairy. He doesn’t play a nervous, neurotic, awkard twenty something year old. Instead he plays a drug-obsessed, over-confident, self-centred dickhead. And he does it so well that if I didn’t know any better I would assume that this is the type of role in which he’s been typecast.

Cera is brilliantly pitted against another type of unlikeable character played by the wonderful Gaby Hoffman. She, Crystal Fairy, is a self-righteous, spiritual, phony pain in the hole.

The story is bascially; they go on a road trip to steal a cactus, turn the cactus into drugs, take the drugs and let the two main characters battle it out for who can be the biggest jerk. The chemistry between Cera and Hoffman make the film, and make it they do.
