31. Michael Kinirons (Strangerland)
Michael Kinirons is an Irish filmmaker whose short films, (Lowland Fell, I Can’t See You Anymore) have been selected for loads of international film festivals and won international awards. He co-wrote Strangerland with Fiona Seres which stars Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes. Set in a middle-of-nowhere Australian town, Strangerland is about a family finds their dull life in a rural outback town rocked after their two teenage children disappear into the desert, sparking disturbing rumours of their past.
We talk to Michael Kinirons about his short films, writing, working with great actors and how surreal it is to watch them on screen and in real life at the same time. He tells us about how Strangerland came about, how he became involved with it. We talk about Irish film, how it might be in a golden age at the moment with all the Oscar nominations and Lenny Abrahamson at the forefront.
Michael Kinirons tells us about his upcoming project, working with a Danish director on a film called We Watched The Sun Disappear. Which he was heading off to Greenland to shoot a week after this interview, which means he’s probably in Greenland now, at time of writing. I hope he brought a big coat.
