In the summer of 2013 a group of SOAS students got together and formed the SOAS Feminist Society. Frustrated about how a single mainstream, capitalist feminism dominates the media and the everyday feminist discourse, SOAS Feminist Society immediately aimed to create a radical and challenging feminist platform. Out of this vibrant environment evolved HYSTERIA.

HYSTERIA is a periodical (published by Square Knot) and a platform committed to bring to the forefront feminist struggles around the world through critical voices.  HYSTERIA strives to expose power relations that have become naturalised and entrenched. It recognises that multiple streams of feminisms exist as a direct outcome of the webs of distinct and overlapping feminist narratives of struggles and oppression. Since textual forms are not always the most appropriate medium to express feminist agony, anger, dreams and beliefs, HYSTERIA involves diverse modes of expression. What all the feminist artists, activists, students and scholars that engage in HYSTERIA have in common is their refusal to reproduce or agree and their commitment to transform the misogynistic monster in all of us.

The one-day exhibition HYSTERIA presents on the 25th of April features artworks that explore the potential of feminist resistance and transformation. The exhibition provides a space for artists who dare to lay bare the reality of patriarchy. Such is a reality that can be denaturalised, scrutinised and criticised, but the question remains, can it ultimately be disrupted? Can feminist critique catch up with reality or will it collapse into futility? It is the impossibility of capturing a moment of detour from reality that art renders momentarily possible. HYSTERIA strives to prompt viewers and the viewed at this exhibition to reflect on how cultural imagery and narratives potentialise manifestation in reality.
