The SlimoWeekly September Roundup Feat. Jeorge II, Rushes & More

Nature is officially healing! In the past month we have seen schools and colleges reopen and we have even been given a date for nightclubs to reopen—am I dreaming? Festivals are in full swing in the UK and smaller scale events have been popping up around Ireland with many more planned for the coming months.

Celebrities have taken to the forefront over the past month with the surprise Donda drop, mixed reviews of Certified Lover Boy, Chloe Bailey going solo, Baby Keem becoming a household name and Travis Scott leaving pregnant girlfriend Kylie Jenner out of his award acceptance speech. That’s right main events that are the VMAs and the MET Gala took over our social media two days in a row with scandals, goss and plenty of fashion.

Jeorge II | Sophisticated Ignorance

Everyone is super excited to attend gigs and events so it’s only right our beloved Irish artists top up their catalogues and get themselves performance ready. Taking to the cover of SlimoWeekly this month is Jeorge II following the release of his much-anticipated sophomore EP, Sophisticated Ignorance. Acting as chapter 2 on his journey, this 6 track EP shows Jeorge II fighting his demons, controlling his ego and learning how to recognise traps that come with being an artist. You will find ‘Taurus 97’ (displaying his thoughts about life, family and a dedication to his Grandad, the first family member to support his music career) and ‘Facts’ (a reminder of how hungry he is to stay on top of the rap game and his mission statement to “put the city on the map”) in our playlist.

Rushes | Glowchild

The tone has definitely been set for artists to drop projects. Slotting into this with perfect timing is Rushes with the release of his debut mixtape Glowchild which brings us on a euphoric journey. The tape displays beautiful production with elements of hip hop, R&B, soul, jazz and pop. After reconnecting with his hometown of Skibbereen, Rushes has allowed his full creative juices to flow. Hosting 9 tracks, Glowchild takes us into the mind of Rushes while also allowing us to aimlessly dance without delving into the lyrics. I was quite surprised to see this mixtape host only one feature but I have to say Rushes and Jafaris collaborate seamlessly on ‘Feeling Like’.

Sello ft. Offica | ‘Oggy’

Two rappers at the centre of the Irish Drill scene teamed up to bring us another Irish anthem ‘Oggy’. Both in their county jerseys, street wear and paddy caps, Sello and Offica drop flows on their new single. We hear their usual slang, lyrics as Gaeilge and golden punchlines that will leave you screaming “oi, oi, oi” for days. This single came with a high quality movie/music video capturing different parts of our culture and we even see a dance sequence. ‘Oggy’ comes with a signature move of its own and I can’t wait to see everyone busting it out in the club.

Fortúne Igiebor ft. Hegs | ‘MR.GORGEOUS’

Fortúne Igiebor returns with his 3rd single of the year, the second one with producer Xcaliber. Sticking to his newfound experimental sound in trap, he brings us a powerful track in ‘MR.GORGEOUS’. Igiebor is not afraid to be open and honest with listeners on his journey through life having regularly shared his highs, lows and coping mechanisms. ‘MR.GORGEOUS’ is introduced to us as a character that is bigger than all of your surroundings and problems. This electric track is balanced out with a melodic rap verse from Derry native Hegs. It is definitely a mood booster and a reminder that you can overcome anything.

Fynch teams up with talented producer Gaptoof to bring us ‘Canal Straddle’ while Nuxsense’s Luthorist takes us on a trip with Sivv and Uwmami on ‘Cosmic Dust’. JyellowL taps into Afro-fusion on ‘See Me Finish’, Jamel Franklin and MidBlue highlight our ‘Late Night’ thinking while we want ‘Better Loving’ from Lil Manna, Mxgiic and Ttokz.

I hope you all get to enjoy SlimoWeekly on your journey to school, college, back to the office, chilling at home or getting ready for that big night out. Fingers crossed I will get to see some of you in person before the next playlist update.

Enjoy your outings and ventures back to normality. WE OUTSIDE OUTSIDE.
