Podcast News Roundup | Podcast Maker Weekend, Plagiarism in True Crime, Spotify For Podcasters

Every fortnight at PodStuff we round up the latest podcast news. This week we’ve got Spotify for Podcasters, scandal in the true crime world, a podcast maker weekend, and some podcast recommendations.

Spotify For Podcasters

Spotify has moved its Spotify for Podcasters dashboard out of beta. Now all podcasters can see how their shows are performing on the platform (in the same way they have been able to on Apple Podcasts for the last year or so). What’s also fun is you can see what music your podcast listeners enjoy. It’s not necessarily essential data (although great if you have a music podcast) but it does provide for some interesting reading!

True Crime Plagiarism

The true crime podcast Crime Junkie has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks, after accusations of plagiarism. A number of accusations have now surfaced, resulting in several episodes of the show being taken down. Following this, The Dollop, a popular history/comedy podcast, was also accused of plagiarism. An article in Vulture magazine covers it in detail.

Podcast Maker Weekend

The London Podcast Festival kicks off next Friday (6th Sept) and, running alongside it, is the Podcast Maker Weekend. The event takes place on the 14th & 15th Sept and has a great line-up of speakers. It is described as “a diverse series of podcasting workshops that […] features a range of sessions on the art, craft, technology, business and politics of podcasting, with sessions to suit beginners and experienced podcasters and audio makers alike”. Prices for sessions start at £6 so if you’re a podcaster in and around London, you’ve no excuse not to be at this!

What To Listen To Next…

There are so many new podcasts and it’s so hard to decide which one to listen to next. If only there was a podcast comprised entirely of podcast trailers… Well, Dan Misener at Pacific Content made one a few weeks ago and it’s a great idea! Nothing But Podcast Trailers is an automated feed which takes any show with a podcast trailer in the US Apple top 200 charts. All the details are here.

And speaking of what to listen to next, I really enjoyed this episode of Inside Podcasting, in which host Skye Pillsbury interviews Ian Chillag, from the wonderful podcast Everything Is Alive. Have a listen below.
